Uniquely Greek Custom A Great Way To
Enjoy GreekTown This Spring

(Toronto, Ontario) – March 1, 2004 - An age-old Greek custom is sweeping Toronto’s GreekTown now that the weather is getting better and the local business association sees it as an opportunity to attract visitors and provide an authentic experience in the city’s east end.

The custom, known as “Volta”, literally a Greek world for a walk, has since ancient times, been more often associated with what North Americans would call strolling or making the rounds.

“The Volta is about as authentic Greek as you get, “ said Sue Zindros, Chair of the GreekTown on the Danforth Business Improvement Area. “Many European countries practice leisurely strolls about the town, but the Greeks have perfected it.”

“Voltas are as much social as they are physical. They’re seen as opportunities to mingle and catch up with neighbours and friends,” she continued.

The Volta is still a daily practice in Greece. They are unstructured and informal and can involve frequent stops. If someone invites a friend, family member or lover to “Volta” it is as likely they’ll end up on a patio sipping a frappé and people watching, or stopping for a bite, as covering any significant ground.

“There is no better spot in the city to enjoy a Volta than GreekTown on the Danforth,” said Zindros. “Toronto is a multicultural mosaic and we offer a great opportunity for everyone to experience our neighbourhood in the true Greek fashion,” she added.

The GreekTown on the Danforth BIA has undertaken an outdoor and online advertising campaign throughout the city, to create awareness and interest in the Volta and the neigbourhood. For more information call the GreekTown BIA at 416-469-5634.
